When I first heard LP Giobbi’s remix of Antibodies by Tensnake and Cara Melin it instantly became a hyper-fixation of mine. I relentlessly showed it to all of my friends, who each loved it without fail. It’s now the first song I think of when I need a mood boost, so I’ve been dying to see her in concert ever since.
When I finally got the chance to see her in concert at the Brighton Music Hall in Boston, I was pleasantly surprised to realize she’s even cooler than I expected. Knowing she was touring for her new Light Places Album, I still expected her to play Antibodies, her remix of Cruel Summer by Taylor Swift, and other remixed songs like any typical DJ set. However, I quickly realized there’s nothing typical about LP Giobbi’s live performance style.
I first realized this right before the concert, when I discovered that she not only performs with her sound board but a piano as well. I also realized most of music is more psychedelic than I thought, kind of like euphoric dance sound baths. My obsessed with her music furthered after watching her ‘Dead House’ live streamed set, which as a huge fan of house and The Grateful Dead, this was about the coolest thing ever. The video is linked below, skip to minute 38 for my favorite part.
Needless to say, I was very excited upon walking into Brighton Music Hall. The venue was fairly small, like a dive bar turned music venue, which is the best type of venue in my opinion (besides Red Rocks of course). Her stage was set up beautifully, with two sound boards, a piano, and flowers hung all around it. She also had great lights to match her sound perfectly and add to the vibrant ambiance. Although, what I loved most about her performance was that you could tell she was so happy to be there. She radiated positivity and honestly looked like a goddess up there with the lights.
Her live music was also more heavily focused on the piano and techno instrumentals. As supposed to her Light Places album, where the production emphasizes the vocals more. The lack of focus on the vocals made the majority of the concert quite mellow. This allowed people to enjoy her music while engaging in conversation, creating a laid back cocktail hour like environment. The perfect environment to go to by yourself I think. One where you can easily meet people, and if you’re uncomfortable dancing alone, it’s certainly not a requirement for this type of music. Although, throughout her set she definitely stepped up the pace a bit encouraging people to dance with a more upbeat energy. There was a time towards the end where she was slowly building up a song to drop, she then turned off all the lights so it was pitch black and the music stopped, only to bring the music and flashing lights back with even more energy. This was really where she had the crowd engaged, the side conversations stopped and everyone’s hands flew in the air. My favorite part though, was when she brought out a violinist on stage.
However, the only downside to her concert was that she didn’t play Antibodies, which was slightly heartbreaking. Luckily, I didn’t leave empty handed. I loved her concert so much I decided to buy her vinyl record of Light Places, and it’s going on my wall as soon as I get back to Denver.
